In the attic, in the closet, in boxes on the bookcases we all have photos scattered around the house that we just don’t know what to do with. While most opt for the shoebox method of storing their loose printed images this isn’t always the best way to ensure they aren’t damaged or lost. For all those photos you keep finding around your home try one of these ways to preserve your printed memories.

4 Ways To Better Protect Your Loose Prints

1. Photo Storage Boxes

One of the best and quickest ways to get loose piles of photos organized is with a photo storage box. They are easy to find as well and can be purchased at any local craft store. Just be sure the photo boxes are of archival quality.

2. Albums or Scrapbooks

Putting your printed photos into an album can seem like a long process. You don’t have to get fancy or specific just slip your photos into an album in the best chronological order you can. If you want to get creative and add in some extra special memories create a scrapbook of your photos.

When choosing albums make sure they are made with acid and lignin free paper, they use non-PVC plastic, and that they do not have magnetic or sticky backed sheets. The best albums are ones that can accommodate various sizes of photos from wallet size to 8×10. Refrain from gluing or using an adhesive to keep your photos in place as you may change your mind.

3. Wall Art and Frames

Don’t forget about the picture frames around your home. You can rotate the pictures in your frames or buy some new ones to hang on the walls as well. This is a great way to give your walls a quick and simple update while also enjoying the memories you’ve captured.

4. Online or Digital Album

The best way to preserve your prints is to transfer them into a digital album or folder. This is the best way to protect your images from damage and ensure you always have a backup copy..

We have all seen photos of ourselves where we simply weren’t happy about how we looked. It’s easy to be your own worst critic but it’s even easier to make small changes in how you pose for photos in order to look slimmer and more confident.

Maternity photography – Newborn photographer – family photographer – newborn photography – baby photos – family photos – Lima, Ohio – Van Wert, Ohio – Delphos Ohio - Fort Wayne Indiana

Low angles are a no-no. Nobody looks good when they’re photographed from below. Photos taken at this angle make you look heavier, shorter and will more than likely give you a bit of a double chin. Instead, take photos from a side angle or from above.

It’s all in the jaw. It might feel rather awkward at first but try practicing moving your chin up slightly and your neck forward so that it accentuates your jaw.

Think before you get dressed. What you wear plays a big role in how you look in photos. Avoid bulky or baggy clothing that doesn’t fit you well. While darker clothes do make you look slimmer, if you want to go for brighter colors, stay away from any patterns that draw attention to your problem areas and always avoid horizontal stripes.

Angles & posture are instant wins. You will always look slimmer in photos if you twist your body slightly to create an angle. Place one leg in front of the other and keep your weight on your back leg. Put one hand on your hip and keep your other arm relaxed at your side, not pushed up against your body. To accentuate your collarbones, stand up straight and push your shoulders back.

Sit correctly. If you’re sitting in a photo, try and cross your ankles instead of your legs. It makes you look leaner and shows less of your thighs.

Stick to the middle. Taking a group shot? Try and stay away from the end of the group if possible as people standing on the edges of the group always look a little bigger.

Remember that confidence makes a big difference to your photos too so don’t forget to smile naturally and let your beauty shine through.

We can never have enough photos of our children but let’s face it; school photos aren’t always our first choice when it comes to what to hang up around the house.

If you’re growing a little tired of the usual school photo formula year after year, why not consider taking some professional headshots at a studio instead? Below are just some of the differences between school photos and studio photos.

Maternity photography – Newborn photographer – family photographer – newborn photography – baby photos – family photos – Lima, Ohio – Van Wert, Ohio – Delphos Ohio - Fort Wayne Indiana

The Backdrop

School Photos: Your child’s school photos are usually shot in front of a generic, sometimes tacky, background. These backgrounds tend to be distracting and move the focus off your child completely.

VS

Studio Photos: Shooting professional headshots in a studio means you have the option of choosing a more classic backdrop, something that keeps the focus on your child.

Posing and Smiling

School Photos: When it’s time to take school photos, kids are called up one at a time, placed in a standard pose and told to smile in front of a complete stranger before being rushed out the door again.

VS

Studio Photos: A professional photographer takes the time to make your child feel more comfortable in front of the camera, which results in a natural expression and smile. They also try a variety of poses so that you walk away with more memorable shots of your kids.

The End Result

School Photos: When you receive your child’s school photos you usually get one or two standard photos in various sizes. There is nothing unique or special about the shots and they usually end up in a drawer in the house.

VS

Studio Photos: A professional photographer not only takes a variety of photos of your child but they spend time editing them too, resulting in photos you can proudly display in your house, photos you know aren’t present in the homes of every other child at school.

It’s definitely worth taking the time to book a professional photographer to take a few headshots of your child if you’re looking for something a little more special to remember your child’s school years by.

What to Expect During Your Baby’s Cake Smash Session

Organizing a cake smash photography session to mark your child’s birthday is such an adorable way to capture this special moment in their lives.
If you don’t know the first thing about what to expect during a cake smash session or how you should prepare, below are a few helpful tips.

Choose a photographer that has worked with children before. A photographer that has experience with children will know how to get the best shots and how to make your little one feel at ease.

A little practice never hurts. For some children, a cake smash session can be quite overwhelming since they are suddenly placed in the spotlight and are being egged on by a bunch of adults to dive into a massive cake. Get them used to this process by giving them a small cake or cupcake at home to practice on.

Use a theme. If your child has a favorite toy or book, planning the cake smash session around this can really bring your session to life. Having a theme will also make it easier to choose a cake color.

Choose your cake carefully. When you order your cake, opt for a small to medium sized cake and choose whipped or butter cream instead of fondant as this can be quite difficult for a small child to break. It’s also recommended that you make sure your child doesn’t have any allergies.

So what should you bring along to a cake smash photography session?

Have some wet wipes and a clean change of clothing available for afterwards.

If a cake needs to be refrigerated, rather make sure it’s room temperature before the session.

Find out from your photographer about a backdrop and how much of the theme décor you’ll need to supply.

If you’re bringing other children along, it would be best to bring someone along who can watch them so that there aren’t any distractions.

Remember that a cake smash session is meant to be a fun experience so trust your photographer and just go with it.

Mini vs Custom Photography Sessions: What You Need to Know

Mini vs Custom Photography Sessions: What You Need to Know

If you’re in the midst of planning a photography session, whether it’s for your newborn baby or just a general family session, you’ve probably heard the term ‘mini session’ mentioned quite a bit.

There are a few differences when it comes to a mini photography session vs a custom session. Here’s what you need to know before you decide which shoot is best for you.

Maternity photography – Newborn photographer – family photographer – newborn photography – baby photos – family photos – Lima, Ohio – Van Wert, Ohio – Delphos Ohio - Fort Wayne Indiana

Time Limits

This is of course one of the main differences between the two sessions. A custom photography session will last an hour or two while a photographer will usually book several mini sessions in one day since they only last about 20 – 25 minutes at most.

Number of Poses

Secondly, a custom photography session will allow for as many poses as possible within the time booked while a mini session offers less time so your photographer will use their skills to capture as many candid moments at possible in a shorter period of time.

Number of Photos

While your photographer will still try and shoot as many photos as possible during your mini session, you will naturally end up with fewer photos than you would if you had booked a custom session. A custom session generates between 30 – 40 images while a mini session will give you about 10. There will also usually be minimal retouching of the photos taken at a mini session.

Maternity photography – Newborn photographer – family photographer – newborn photography – baby photos – family photos – Lima, Ohio – Van Wert, Ohio – Delphos Ohio - Fort Wayne Indiana

So which photography session is best for you?

You may be surprised to find that many of our clients actually choose both! Often our clients will opt for the custom session for the entire family at a location of their choice. This gives them more time to play around with poses, backdrops, props and wardrobe changes. While they opt for mini sessions to get a few great photos of the kiddos as a compliment in between the custom sessions.

Regardless of which you choose, we look forward to working with you!

Try and stay away from asking your kids to pose. Instead, be around to capture the emotions they display in a moment. If you’re patient enough and simply enjoy the time with your children, you’ll find it much easier to capture the essence of it.

Get down to their level. If you’re photographing very small children try and get down to their level to photograph them. This angle gives you a more interesting background too.

Have a conversation with them. Having a conversation with your child about their favorite superhero or their best friend at school will make for lovely facial expressions. You could even have them sing along to their favorite songs for extra fun photos.

Your smartphone is the perfect tool for capturing candid moments. Your children are probably very used to seeing you with your smartphone so won’t think anything of you keeping it close by. Have it ready when you’re out and about with them. You never know when they might give you the perfect shot.

Use unique locations to your advantage. If you have planned a walk in the woods or a day at the beach, take advantage of your unique surroundings to capture some great pictures.

Avoid midday sunlight. Lighting makes a big difference in photos so aim for early morning or evening light for outdoor shots and open windows and doors for indoor shots.
